How to protect yourself from the Zika virus if you plan to visit Rio?

More than 600,000 people are expected to attend the Rio Olympics this year and both the participants and the spectators seem worried about the damage that comes from contracting the ZIKA virus.

Some of the athletes have raised concerns about the potential epidemic. Everyone wants to understand what the risks are and what they can do protect themselves.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease and thus an outbreak is a cause of concern for many people around the world. This virus causes birth defects in which the babies have underdeveloped brains.

The main problem about this disease is that there are no symptoms. There is a high probability that you wouldn't even know you’re infected at all.

So if you plan to attend the Olympics this year, here are some tips to protect yourself from the  ZiKa virus.

1.     It is recommended that you use an insect repellent and wear long sleeve shirts.

2.     For women: Dr.Jarvis, a general practitioner from the Royal College of General Practitioners, advises pregnant women to skip the travel altogether since they are the greatest at risk. If you must attend the Olympics in Rio, then make sure that you don't get pregnant before or during the trip. 8 weeks is the minimum time period required to not be pregnant before travelling to Rio.

3.     For men: Make sure to only engage in protected sex while in Rio and 8 weeks after you return. If you test positive for the virus, then make sure you do not engage in unprotected sex at least for 6 months.
